Sam’s Club intends to have its proprietary Scan & Go mobile payment technology in use at all of its fuel stations by the end of this year.
Piloted earlier this year at select locations, Scan & Go Fuel will be offered at 70-plus fuel stations this month, growing to the full fleet of 518 fuel stations across the country by the end of 2020.
Upon downloading the Sam’s Club app, consumers can click on a Scan & Go icon to scan the QR code at the fuel station pump. They then select their method of payment, and a receipt is emailed after fueling, eliminating the need to scan their membership card.
Sam’s Club first brought the Scan & Go technology to its warehouse clubs in 2016, and it’s become increasingly popular with consumers since the start of the pandemic. Even prior to the growth in consumer desire for expedited checkout services, the retailer was experimenting with computer vision and machine learning to enhance its capabilities.
“Our member adoption rate has doubled since this time last year and we don’t see that slowing down, especially as our members continue to crave quick and safe shopping experiences,” wrote Eddie Garcia, Sam’s Club senior VP and chief product officer, and Vinod Bidarkoppa, senior VP of technology, in a company blog post.
