To further reduce the use of plastic packaging, The Body Shop will now offer refillable makeup products. The move comes a year after the beauty retailer rolled out refill stations across U.S. stores.

The Body Shop already offers hair care, shower gels, and hand soaps in recycled aluminum bottles and will now include a collection of lipsticks in refillable cases. The Peptalk Lipstick comes in 20 shades and is made using ethically sourced shea butter.

In 2021, the beauty retailer laid out an ambitious commitment to have the majority of its stores across the world fitted with refill stations within five years. Through the initiative, the company said it could save 25 tons of plastic per year.

In 2022, The Body Shop announced it would extend the refill program to stores across the U.S., eventually meeting its goal to offer refill stations in 50 percent of its stores by the end of the year. Sustainable items are a hot commodity: the company says their refillable products are most popular and perform well among younger consumers (those aged 16-34), and sales in this category increased by 65 percent throughout 2022.

“We want our customers to understand first and foremost that they can be changemakers—and that even small individual acts, like refilling your shampoo or shower gel in a reusable container, can have a big impact on our planet,” said Hilary Lloyd, VP of marketing and corporate social responsibility for The Body Shop North America. "The climate crisis is the greatest risk facing our future, which is why we call on beauty lovers everywhere to use their purchasing power to embrace a circular economy."
